How to Get a Refund on Google Play for Games and In-App Purchases
Bought a game you don’t want or got charged by mistake? Learn how Google Play refunds work, the 48-hour window, in-app purchase refunds, and what to do after.
Maybe a game didn’t work on your phone, your child made a purchase without permission, or you bought the wrong item. Google Play has a refund process for these situations. Here’s how it works and how to give yourself the best chance of getting your money back.
Understand the refund timeline
Google Play’s refund options depend on how much time has passed:
- Within 48 hours of purchase: You can usually request a refund directly from Google Play. Google reviews the request and decides.
- After 48 hours: Google generally directs you to contact the app’s developer, who has its own refund policy.
- Unauthorized charges: If you didn’t authorize a purchase, you can report it to Google, generally within 120 days.
Google’s policies can change, so check the official Google Play Help Center for the latest details.
How to request a refund within 48 hours
On a computer or phone browser
- Go to play.google.com and sign in.
- Open your profile and go to Payments & subscriptions → Budget & history (or Order history).
- Find the purchase.
- Select Request a refund or Report a problem.
- Choose the reason that best matches your situation and submit.
In the Play Store app
- Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions → Budget & history.
- Find the purchase and look for an option to request a refund or report a problem. If you don’t see it, use the browser method above.
You’ll usually get an email with Google’s decision. Approved refunds return to your original payment method.
Tip: Be specific and honest when describing the problem. For example: “The game crashes on launch on my phone” or “My 7-year-old made this purchase without permission.”
Refunds for in-app purchases
In-app purchases, like game currency and items, follow the same process. A few things to know:
- If you’re refunded for in-game currency, the developer may remove the currency or items from your account.
- Repeated refund requests may be denied, and abuse can lead to account restrictions.
Contacting the developer after 48 hours
Every Play Store listing includes the developer’s contact information. Scroll to App support on the game’s page to find their email and website. When you contact them, include:
- Your order number (from the purchase email or order history)
- The date and amount of the purchase
- A clear description of the problem
Accidental purchases by kids
If a child made a purchase without permission, report it as soon as possible using the steps above. Then prevent it from happening again by turning on purchase authentication. Our guide to controlling in-app purchases shows exactly how.
Uninstalled a paid game within two hours?
Google has historically offered an automatic refund if you uninstall a paid app shortly after buying it, though the window is short and policies can change. Don’t rely on this — use the refund request process to be safe.
What usually isn’t refundable
- Purchases you fully used, such as currency already spent
- Items from repeated refund requests
- Purchases made long ago, without a valid reason
Subscriptions
Canceling a subscription stops future charges but doesn’t usually refund the current period. If you were charged unexpectedly for a renewal, you can still request a refund through the same process. Learn more in our subscriptions guide.
Quick refund checklist

- For unauthorized charges, report them to Google as soon as possible.
- Turn on purchase authentication to prevent repeats.
Refunds aren’t guaranteed, but acting quickly and explaining clearly gives you the best chance.
