How to Fix Game Lag on Android: 11 Fixes That Actually Work

Is your game stuttering or freezing? Fix lag on Android by sorting out frame drops vs. network lag, adjusting graphics, freeing memory, and cooling your phone.

Matching graphics settings to your phone is the biggest single fix for stutter.

“Lag” can mean two very different problems. Frame lag happens when your phone can’t draw the game smoothly, causing stutter and choppy motion. Network lag happens when your connection is slow or unstable, causing rubber-banding, delayed actions, or teleporting enemies. The fixes are different, so first figure out which one you have.

Which kind of lag do you have?

Symptom Likely cause
Choppy motion even in single-player or menus Frame lag (phone performance)
Game gets worse after 10–20 minutes Frame lag from overheating
Characters teleport or snap back Network lag
High ping number shown in game Network lag
Actions happen late, but motion is smooth Network lag

Most competitive games can show your FPS (frames per second) and ping in settings. Turn them on to see what’s happening.

Fixes for frame lag (stutter)

1. Lower graphics settings

Choose Balanced or Smooth graphics instead of Ultra. Turn off or reduce shadows, anti-aliasing, and effects. A steady frame rate is far more important than fancy visuals.

2. Pick a frame rate your phone can hold

Setting 120 FPS on a phone that can only sustain 60 causes uneven stutter. Choose the highest frame rate your phone holds steadily, even if it’s lower.

3. Close background apps

Open the recent apps screen and close apps you’re not using, especially video, camera, and navigation apps. Android manages memory well, but heavy apps running in the background can still compete with your game.

4. Restart your phone

A simple restart clears temporary glitches and frees memory. If you rarely restart, try it before your next gaming session.

5. Keep your phone cool

Heat is the biggest hidden cause of lag. When your phone gets hot, it slows down to protect itself. Remove thick cases, avoid fast charging while playing, and keep the phone out of sunlight. See our full guide: stop your phone from overheating while gaming.

6. Turn off battery saver

Battery saver modes limit performance. Turn them off while playing demanding games, or use your phone’s game mode to choose a performance profile. Our game mode guide shows where to find it.

7. Free up storage

Phones slow down when storage is almost full. Keep at least a few gigabytes free. Follow our storage cleanup guide.

8. Update the game and Android

Updates often include performance fixes and better optimization for specific phones. Check the Play Store and Settings → System → System update.

Avoid “booster” apps: Third-party RAM cleaners and “game boosters” from unknown developers rarely help and can make performance worse by constantly restarting apps. Use your phone’s built-in game tools instead.

Fixes for network lag

9. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi and get closer to the router

5 GHz Wi-Fi is usually faster and less crowded than 2.4 GHz. Walls and distance weaken signals, so play closer to your router if you can.

10. Stop other downloads and streams

Video streaming, game updates, and cloud backups on your network compete with your game. Pause them while you play.

11. Choose the nearest server

Many online games let you choose a server region. Pick the one closest to you — for most US players, that means a US East, US Central, or US West server.

When to accept your phone’s limits

Older or budget phones may not run the newest 3D games smoothly, no matter the settings. If you’ve tried everything, consider lighter games, cloud gaming (if your connection is strong), or upgrading. Our guide to choosing a phone for gaming explains what matters.

Quick lag checklist

  1. Turn on the FPS and ping display.
  2. Lower graphics and choose a steady frame rate.
  3. Close background apps and restart.
  4. Keep the phone cool and battery saver off.
  5. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi and the nearest server.

Work through these in order and most lag problems disappear — no new phone required.
